Leading global design firm, Stantec, has completed the master plan for Southwest Park and Roscoe Right Park, which were made public on September 21, 2020 at a presentation to the Blue Springs City Council. The renderings and plans detail the vision for outdoor park space, indoor event facilities and memorable activity spaces that the public can enjoy year-round.
The Southwest Park master plan is a result of the merging of elements to create a design that weaves green park amenities and built structures with the natural setting of the site. Large serpentine lawn spaces are positioned strategically throughout the site to preserve existing tree massings and maximize flexible open space. Unique park amenities are located to take advantage of the varying topography and existing water ways, these include: a crescent hill for unscripted play and sledding, an elevated tree walk, an informal amphitheater space, a pedestrian bridge crossing, bike trails, hiking paths, a pump track and an identity play structure. The plan also includes an event complex for weddings, corporate events, celebrations, community gatherings and other unique programming. This complex includes an event barn, main house, conservatory, arrival garden, vehicular drop-off and a formal lawn panel that allows for flexibility.
The Roscoe Righter master plan outlines a design that centralizes the primary activity zones of the park, distributes parking throughout the site, creates buffer zones along the edges of the park and creates a vehicular connection from the north to the south property lines. The park drive is aligned to maximize views of the activity center and provide direct access to parking while limiting the amount of primary roadway through the site. A large festival lawn is created to accommodate larger events, while smaller spaces allow for gatherings throughout the site. A concentration of activities and programmed facilities is located at the activity hub in the center of the park. This zone has a variety of engagement opportunities for all age levels providing ample plaza space for festivals while being directly connected to the festival green space. The multi-season experience loop provides an outdoor destination in the park that is unique to the Kansas City metro. The flexibility of the loop and the ability to program events year round allows for the space to become a destination gathering point for the community. Additional park amenities include a field of flowers landscape feature, bouldering, adventure course, trail loop and a dog park with tree cover to provide shade during summer months.
