[ARCHIVED] Waste Disposal Task Force to present preliminary recommendations

Blue Springs, Mo. – The Waste Disposal Task Force will present their preliminary recommendations on Thursday, October 27 at 7 p.m. in the Howard L. Brown Public Safety Building, Multi-Purpose Room, 1100 SW Smith St., in a public forum format. The public is encouraged to attend and public comment is permitted. Once the Task Force finalizes their recommendations, they will present them to the City Council for further action. No date has been scheduled yet for the City
Council hearing.

The Waste Disposal Task Force was formed by Mayor Carson Ross in late 2010 and is comprised of multiple City Council members, representatives from private haulers, Solid Waste Management Commission members, a homes owner’ association representative and community members. The task force was created in response to the Solid Waste Management Commission’s recommendation to initiate a 2-year notice for the City to contract single-hauler services. The City Council requested more research on the issue prior to making any changes to the City’s current waste disposal services.

The group was tasked to look into how the City can lower disposal costs for residents, reduce road maintenance costs by altering pickup schedules and save landfill space through increased recycling. After one year of analysis, discussion, debate and compromise the task force is ready to present their recommendations for waste disposal changes in Blue Springs.

The Waste Disposal Task Force is not recommending that the City take over solid waste hauling services or that a single-hauler provide all disposal services, but they are recommending two alternatives that meet the task force objectives and will improve the community as a whole.
