[ARCHIVED] Snow removal process update

BLUE SPRINGS, Mo. – Current accumulation in Blue Springs is estimated at over 10 inches with snow drifts over 18 inches deep. When snow reaches these depths, the snow removal process becomes more challenging. Snow removal crews continue to work around the clock to keep streets clear.

“Conditions are dangerous on the roads this evening, so we are cautioning residents to avoid driving tonight and give our drivers and contractors room to work,” City Administrator Eric Johnson said. “We will be monitoring conditions overnight as we continue to clear the roadways.”

The National Weather Service forecasts that the snow should begin to taper off at 8 p.m. and we are expecting 2 to 3 inches of new snow overnight. Private contractors will begin assisting the City in its snow removal process at midnight tonight. These contractors will be removing snow piles in the middle of cul-de-sac streets created by the snow plowing process. Contractors will lift the snow out of these troubled areas and place the excess snow on resident lawns.

A primary resident concern is the amount of snow that accumulates at the end of driveways after crews have completed the street plowing process. We apologize for the inconvenience, but the windrows are an unavoidable part of the snow removal process.

The City of Blue Springs requests that residents remove all parked vehicles from city streets due to blizzard-like conditions. Vehicles parked on streets during severe weather can impede plowing efforts and slow emergency response vehicles.

Residents can call the 24-hour snow removal hotline at (816) 228-0295 to learn the latest information on the City’s snow removal process. Updates will also be available on the City’s Web site and social media outlets.
