[ARCHIVED] Mayor Ross will appoint James L. May to the City Council

BLUE SPRINGS, Mo. – Mayor Carson Ross has nominated James L. May, real estate broker for Zuvers Real Estate Services and a sitting Planning Commissioner, to the vacant Council District 1 seat that was held by Jeanie Lauer. Representative Lauer relinquished her City Council seat on January 3, 2011 and assumed the 54th District seat in the Missouri House of Representative on January 5, 2011.

“This was a difficult decision,” Mayor Ross said. “There are so many outstanding candidates in Blue Springs, but in the end it was May’s history of community involvement, his understanding of the issues facing the City today and his commitment to Blue Springs’s future that made him my choice for this position,” Mayor Ross said. “I am confident he will do an excellent job and am excited to submit a person of May’s caliber as a City Council member.”

May has been a resident of Blue Springs for over 25 years and served as a planner in the Out of the Blue, into the Future Citizen Visioning Process. He is also a member of the Blue Springs Citizens Academy Alumni Association.

In 2008 Mayor Ross appointed May to the City’s Planning Commission for a four year term. James also serves as an alternate Planning Commission Representative for the City’s Board of Zoning Adjustment. If confirmed to the Council, May would step down from his Planning Commission and Board of Zoning Adjustment positions to assume the City Council seat.

May holds a bachelor’s degree in Math and Social Sciences from San Diego State University. May served two tours in Viet Nam and completed four years of service in the United States Navy. He has been married to his wife, Maxine for over 32 years and they have two children and three grandchildren.

Mayor Ross will present his nomination of May at the January 18, 2011 City Council meeting. The City Council will vote to confirm the appointment. If confirmed, May is expected to take his oath of office immediately after the vote.
