[ARCHIVED] WWII veterans to be honored on 75th Anniversary of D-Day

BLUE SPRINGS, MO. –  The City of Blue Springs is joining with the Blue Springs Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) to celebrate our WWII Heroes and Veterans at a 75th Anniversary and Commemorative Event for D-Day on Thursday, June 6, 2019 at 10:30 a.m. at Veterans Way Memorial, Veterans Way, Pink Hill Park, Blue Springs, Mo.

“We must never forget the sacrifices that were made on June 6, 1944 when the sea turned red with blood from Operation Overlord when 150,000 troops arrived on the beaches of Juno, Utah, Gold, Omaha and Sword. Allied forces provided strong air support from: Britain, Canada, France, Poland, Belgium, Czechoslovakia, Greece and the Netherlands. This would be the turning point in WWII and the beginning of the end of Nazi Germany,” said Susan Rew, program coordinator for the Blue Springs DAR.

The  “Forever Welcome Home” ceremony will include a Proclamation delivered by Mayor Carson Ross to honor all WWII veterans, a Missouri House Resolution presented by State Representative Jeff Coleman and Dr. Dan C. Fullerton, PhD. Associate Professor of Military History, School of Advanced Military Studies US Army Command and General Staff College Fort Leavenworth, KS as the keynote speaker. WW11 re-enactor and military historian, Rick McClellan will also make some remarks.

“I am proud to honor our heroic WWII veterans on this 75th Anniversary of D-Day right here in Blue Springs,” said Mayor Carson Ross. “The sacrifices these, and all our veterans, have made to this country deserve to be recognized in perpetuity. We are so grateful for their dedication to our country and our freedom.”

Blue Springs DAR will dedicate a bench to the “Veterans of World War II for Their Courage and Valor on the 75th Anniversary of D-Day”.

Sons of the American Revolution and VFW Post 6603 will present the Colors and the Salute to the Fallen by American Legion Post 499. Certificates and pins will be presented to all veterans in attendance. WWII Military-issued memorabilia and vehicles will be on display and a reception will follow.
